Chinese Foregin Minister Wang Yi: Palestine Governing Palestine is Basic Principle of Post-War Reconstruction in Gaza
JAKARTA - Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that Palestine governing Palestine is the basic principle of post-war reconstruction in Gaza, part of the three steps to resolve the issue in Palestine that he put forward.
Speaking at the Palestinian reconciliation dialogue forum held in Beijing on July 21-23, Foreign Minister Wang witnessed the signing of a declaration on ending division and strengthening unity by 14 Palestinian factions, including Hamas and Fatah, the two largest factions.
He said that China has no personal interests regarding the Palestinian issue. However, he continued, as one of the first countries to recognize the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and the State of Palestine, Beijing has always firmly supported the Palestinian people in restoring their legitimate national rights.
He said that the conflict in Gaza continues to drag on and its impacts are increasingly widespread.
"To get out of the current conflict situation, China proposes a three-step approach," he said, as reported by Xinhua on July 24.
He explained that the first step is to push for a comprehensive, lasting, and sustainable ceasefire in the Gaza Strip as soon as possible, ensuring humanitarian assistance and access to aid.
"The international community must unite on the ceasefire issue," he stressed.
The second step, he continued, is to uphold the principle of 'the Palestinian people governing Palestine', working together to push for a post-war government in Gaza.
According to him, Gaza is an inseparable and important part of Palestine. Starting post-war reconstruction as soon as possible has become an urgent issue in the next stage.
"The international community must support the Palestinian factions to form an interim government with a national consensus to effectively manage Gaza and the West Bank," he called.
The third step, he continued, is to push Palestine to become a full member of the United Nations and start implementing the two-state solution. A more significant, more authoritative, and more effective international peace conference must be supported, and a timetable and roadmap for this must be made, he said.
