Meta Suspends Use Of Generative AI Equipment In Brazil
JAKARTA - Meta Platforms announced on Wednesday 17 July that it decided to suspend the use of a generating artificial intelligence (AI) tool in Brazil. This was done in response to the samba state government's objections to the company's new privacy policy regarding personal and AI data.
With a population of more than 200 million people, Brazil is a very important market for Meta. For example, Brazil has the second largest user base for WhatsApp after India. In June, Meta held an event in Sao Paulo to launch its first AI-driven advertising targeting program for businesses in the popular chat service.

Earlier this month, the Brazilian National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) decided to suspend Meta's new privacy policy allowing the use of personal data to train the country's generative AI systems. ANPD stipulates that the company must adjust its privacy policy to exclude sections related to processing personal data for generative AI training, in accordance with Brazilian authorities' rules.
In a statement, Meta stated that it decided to suspend the tools while they were in talks with ANPD to address the authorities' doubts regarding generative artificial intelligence.
