All-new KONA Electric, Becomes First Electric Car With Indonesian-made Battery

JAKARTA - PT Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (HMMI) officially started mass production of the Hyundai all-new KONA Electric.

The All-new KONA Electric is an electric car produced by Indonesia that marks Hyundai's commitment to creating a comprehensive electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem in Indonesia. This new car is Hyundai's first EV to use not only Indonesian-made batteries but also powered by local-made cell batteries.

"Hyundai all-new KONA Electric is the first EV in Indonesia that is actually produced through the entire EV production value chain, ranging from battery cells, battery packages to all-new KONA Electric. This is proof of Hyundai's innovation and commitment to a sustainable future, and will continue to contribute to economic growth and the Indonesian environment outside of producing vehicles. We will continue to have a positive impact on the local environment and economy," explained Sunny Kim, President of Hyundai Motor Asia Pacific, in an official statement received, Wednesday, July 17.

KONA Electric is equipped with batteries produced by PT Hyundai Energy Indonesia (HEI) and cells supplied by PT Hyundai LG Indonesia (HLI) Green Power. This approach supports domestic industry, government initiatives, and reduces car environmental tracks.

"With the All-New KONA Electric, we aim to strengthen Indonesia's role as a global leader in EV production and the automotive industry as a whole," he added.

The HMMI plant has a production capacity of up to 150,000 vehicles per year, with the capability to expand to 250,000 units. This impressive facility produces some of Hyundai's most popular models, including CRETA, IONIQ 5, SANTA FE, STARGAZER, and All-New KONA Electric. However, its reach goes beyond Indonesia's limits. MMMI serves as an important export hub, sending vehicles to major markets across Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, Africa, and America.

HMMI operates with commitment to environmental principles. The plant is powered by 100 percent renewable electrical energy, utilizing solar panels and hydropower. Dedication of clean energy has received recognition from the global RE100 program, which is proof of commitment to sustainability. More than that, HMMI uses Regenerative Thermal Oxidizers (RTO) to minimize pollution and reduce the dangerous Volatill Organic Compounds (VOCs) released during production. This ensures a cleaner environment for workers and the surrounding community.
