DPR Asks Ministry Of Industry To Evaluate Smelter Kalimantan Ferro Industry

JAKARTA - Member of Commission VII DPR RI, Mulyanto urged the Minister of Industry, Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, to audit and review the license of the PT. Kalimantan Ferro Industry (KFI) smelter industry located in Pen Cooling Village, Sanga-Sanga District, Kutai Kartanegara, East Kalimantan.

Mulyanto assessed that the operation of the KFI smelter which was only a few kilometers from settlement was very dangerous and disturbing to the public. In addition, Commission VII saw that KFI management was unprofessional and competent in managing the smelter. This was revealed in the General Hearing Meeting (RDPU) of Commission VII DPR RI with PT KFI on July 8, 2024, which was a follow-up to the inspection of Commission VII DPR RI to the location of the post-fire smelter.

"The indication is that two fires occurred in a relatively close period, namely October 2023 and May 16, 2024. In the second accident several workers were seriously injured, while in the first accident two workers died," Mulyanto said in a statement to the media, Tuesday, July 9.

He added another indicator of the existence of KFI mismanagement where all company directors are foreigners and do not have the President Director. Of the 3 directors, none of them acted as the President Director. In addition, those who attended the RDPU were only the power of the board of directors who turned out to be representatives of shareholders.

"This is strange. What is present in the RDPU is not the executive, but the representation of the company owner, also only a board of directors. As a result, the RDPU did not make any conclusions or meeting records because it was feared that the issue of the validity of the meeting was related to the validity of the meeting," Mulyanto explained.

Mulyanto said this incident was harassment against the legislative body, did not respect the people's representative institutions, haphazardly.

"Industrial management like this is really worrying," he said.
