Hezbollah Attacks Israel's Military Facilities On Mount Hermon Syria

JAKARTA - Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah launched a drone attack on Mount Hermon on the Israeli-occupied Syrian Golan highlands. In this region, Israel has a major surveillance center.

This attack became the first bombing since Hezbollah began a shootout with Israel on October 8, 2023.

Despite repeatedly attacking other areas of the Syrian Golan highlands, Hezbollah said this was the first time they had attacked military targets at the highest altitude in Israeli-controlled territory.

Israel has major installations of surveillance, espionage and air defenses on Mount Hermon overlooking the Syrian capital and serves to monitor Syria, Iraq, Jordan, and parts of Saudi Arabia since the Arab-Israeli war in October 1973.

Reporting from Reuters on Monday, July 8, the conflict between Hezbollah and Israel has gradually escalated over months, raising fears of a full-scale war, which both sides say they are avoiding and diplomats are trying to prevent it.

Hezbollah stepped up its attack, delivered large numbers of explosives, used a new type of rocket, and stated that it had targeted Israeli warplanes for the first time, according to sources familiar with Hezbollah's weapons.

This escalation tests unwritten rules that have largely restricted conflicts in border areas or nearby since October, so that cities in Lebanon and Israel are not affected.

Israel blames Iran-backed Hezbollah for escalating violence and has repeated its promise to restore security on the border. Israeli Defense Forces did not immediately return requests for comment on Hezbollah's latest attack.
