MUI Lebak: We Cannot Do Santet, If The Victim Dies Our Sins Are Not Forgiven

JAKARTA - Deputy Chairman of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) of Lebak Regency, KH Akhmad Khudori, said that Allah SWT does not forgive the sins of the perpetrators of witchcraft, because their actions were categorized as polytheists.

"We as Muslims should not commit musyrik acts by worshiping other than Allah SWT," he said, at the Al Abror Islamic Boarding School, Lebak Regency, as reported by Antara, Thursday, March 18.

The view of Islamic teachings is very strong that magic or witchcraft is included in the category of polytheism and in the holy book Al Quran Surah Annisa 48 that the perpetrator of witchcraft has not forgiven Allah SWT.

Certainly, witchcraft should not be done, because they worship jinn, demons, or shamans and Allah also damages these actions because they associate Allah with other creatures.

In fact, the Central MUI has issued a fatwa on the prohibition of witchcraft. "We ask that witchcraft is not taught because they worship jinn and demons," he explained.

According to him, witchcraft developed not only in Banten but in all regions, because in the past the Indonesian people embraced animist beliefs.

In general, he said, the meaning of witchcraft language injures, hurts, divorces husband and wife to kill by means of supernatural powers. Therefore, Sultan Hasanudin Banten fought magicians or witchcraft, because their actions were idolatrous by believing in jinn and demons.

"We are not allowed to do witchcraft and if the victim dies then the sin will not be forgiven and leave the religion of Islam," he said.

He said that Islam does not teach witchcraft, because that was musyrik act. Currently, people still believe in magic, even though it cannot be proven legally.

An incident in the case of witchcraft in Lebak Regency, Banten, has occurred by accusing another person of witchcraft so that residents judge him. "We hope to avoid idolatrous acts because they are against Islam," he said.
