Why The Dry Season Still Rains: Here's An Explanation. BMKG

YOGYAKARTA - Summer in Indonesia today is arguably a bit different. Because even though it has entered the summer with clear signs, it is still raining. Come on, find out why the dry season still rains in our country!

Launching from the website of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), they predict that light to heavy rainfall still has the potential to flush most parts of Indonesia over the next week, even though it has entered the dry season.

This is due to the still active phenomenon of some significant global-regional-scale atmospheric dynamics. Among them, the La Nina phenomenon which was identified as still quite active in the weak type in July.

"This situation still affects the provision of water vapor in general in the Indonesian atmosphere," said Deputy for Meteorology, Guswanto in Jakarta.

Not only La Nina, said Guswanto, the Dipole Mode phenomenon in the Indian Ocean area currently also shows a fairly influential index in triggering an increase in rainfall, especially in the western part of Indonesia.

Meanwhile, continued Guswanto, on a regional scale, there are several atmospheric wave phenomena that actively increase convective activity and make rain clouds, namely; MJO (Madden Jullian Oscillation), Kelvin waves, and Rossby waves that took place in the same period.

"The presence of wind bend patterns as well as meeting areas and deceleration of wind speed (convergence) around southern Sumatra and in western Java is also able to increase the potential for rain cloud formation in the area, supported by a positive sea level temperature anomaly that can increase water vapor capability in the atmosphere," he explained.

For Guswanto, although currently most parts of Indonesia have penetrated the dry season, the reason for the occurrence of atmospheric phenomena has triggered the formation of weather dynamics which has an impact on the rain in most parts of Indonesia.

The following is the prediction of the potential for rain for the next week (July 2024):

MEANWHILE, IT CAN STILL HAPPEN in some areas as follows:

LIGHT-WHILE, IT CAN still happen in some areas as follows:

Meanwhile, for the Jabodetabek area, it is still necessary to be aware of the potential for moderate to heavy rain which can be accompanied by lightning and strong winds during the afternoons, especially in the western, eastern, and southern regions.

On this occasion, Guswanto also appealed to the public to be aware of the possibility of rain that could cause hydrometeorological disasters such as floods, landslides, flash floods. In addition to the dry season, Guswanto also warned the public to be aware of the impact of drought.

"Saving and using water wisely. So that we can face the impact of drought due to the dry season together," he concluded.

What Causes The Dry Season To Become Very Long?

Low or irregular rainfall is the main trigger, reducing the water supply available for plants. Climate change that increases global temperatures and replaces weather patterns also extends the drought period.
