Bada Alberto In Mexico Weakens, 4 People Died

JAKARTA - Alberto, the first storm in the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, weakened as he moved into the interior of northeastern Mexico. Heavy rains and floods caused four people to die.

Nuevo state governor Leon in Mexico three teenagers died as a result of the storm. Civil protection then reported the fourth death from an electric shock, local media reported.

One of the victims was identified by an emergency service as a 15-year-old boy who was swept away by the current outside Monterrey.

But the storm brings much-needed rain in most parts of Mexico, where some of its reservoirs have an 8 percent water level due to prolonged drought and summer waves. Rain also fills the almost-exhaust La Boca dam.

Brett Anderson, senior meteorologist at AccuWeather, said the extreme heat and drought experienced by Mexico would become more normal due to climate change.

Climate change is also expected to contribute to more storms in the Atlantic this hurricane season, as warmer sea water allows strong storms to rise faster.
