Thousands Of Hungarians Protest EU Fines Against Budapest Over Asylum

MOSCOW - Thousands of Hungarians rallied in front of the European Commission building in Budapest on Friday (14/6) to protest against the European Court's decision to fine the country for failing to implement a joint asylum policy from the European Union (EU).

The amount of fines imposed on the Hungarian government was 200 million euros (Rp 3.52 trillion), according to a report by Russia's news agency, RIA Novosti.

The court announced its decision on Thursday (13/6). Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban called the decision "outrageous and unacceptable".

"This EU court ruling is against the basic Hungarian law and has no force against us. We do not accept it, we will not comply!" said journalist Zsolt Bayer, a keynote speaker at the action.

Bayer added that the European Union court decision was "unacceptable" for disrupting Hungarian democracy.

Hungary fulfilled its obligations regarding the acceptance of Ukrainian refugees, who "wanted to be sent back to Ukraine by the EU to die", he continued.

Hungary also protects the EU's foreign borders from undocumented migrants, the journalist said.

Some protesters held posters that read "There is no war. There is no gender. There is no migration" and "The European Union Court is gone," reports correspondent RIA Novosti.

The protesters also applauded as Bayer curated, shouting, "The EU trial is not our king."
