BMKG Asks North Sumatra Nias Fishermen To Beware Of High Waves Until June 10

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKB) of Maritime Meteorological Station Belawan reminded fishermen to be aware of the potential for high waves in the Indian Ocean west of Nias, North Sumatra (North Sumatra).

"Be aware of high waves that can reach 2.5 meters in the Indian Ocean west of Nias. The same conditions can also occur in the Indian Ocean west of Aceh," said Belawan Maritime Meteorological Station forecaster Christen Novena, in Medan, Friday, June 7, as reported by Antara.

He said that the high wave conditions have the potential to occur on Saturday, June 8 morning until evening and can continue until Monday, June 10 evening. Strong local liabilities that support the convective process, he said, are local on a local scale in Aceh and North Sumatra.

Wind patterns in northern Sumatra waters generally from southwest to north at a speed of 4-25 knots.

Regarding the high wave conditions, he continued, fishing boats, barges, ferries, besa-sized ships, such as cargo ships and cruise ships, are expected to pay attention to the high risk of shipping safety.

To people who live and work on the coast around areas where high waves are likely to occur, he said, they are asked to remain vigilant.

Meanwhile, regarding the general weather, BBMKG forecaster Region I Medan Fauziah Fitri Damanik said a number of areas in North Sumatra still have the potential to rain with moderate to heavy intensity, especially in the East Slope region.

"Be aware of the potential for moderate to heavy rain in the East Slope of North Sumatra which can have the potential for floods, landslides, and other hydrometeorological disasters," said Fauziah.
