Learning From The October 7 Attack, Israel Forms A New Anti-terror Unit At The Gaza Border
JAKARTA - Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced the formation of a new anti-terror unit that will operate in settlements on the Gaza border, with personnel being taken from former special forces.
The unit, called LOTAR Otef, refers to the Otef Aza or Gaza envelope, was founded on Monday, in accordance with instructions from IDF Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi.
"This is part of a learning that has emerged from an initial investigation into the October 7 events," the IDF said.

The IDF said the unit would consist of reserve soldiers who previously served in special forces, living in Gaza border settlements or nearby cities, so they were ready for sudden events.
Citing The Jerusalem Post, the purpose of forming this new unit is to provide a quick response to attacks on the Gaza border community, part of the military's efforts to increase public security.
"The formation of units during this period contains the essence of the story of the State of Israel, from destruction to revival," said the new unit commander with the initials Lt. Col. 'A'.

As an anti-terror unit, all members will undergo special training to face "challenges in the area."
The IDF said hundreds of reserve soldiers had signed up to serve at the Otef LOTAR, and in the coming weeks, they would start training.
