Mount Ibu Eruption Of Ash Clouds As High As Seven Kilometers

JAKARTA - A seven-kilometer-high volcanic ash cloud rose into the sky due to the eruption of Mount Ibu, in northwest Halmahera Island, West Halmahera Regency, North Maluku Province. Mount Ibu Observation Post officer Axl Roeroe said the eruption occurred this afternoon at 12.45 WIT resulting in a column of gray to black ash leading to the west. "The eruption was recorded on a seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 373 seconds," said Roeroe, ANTARA, Sunday, June 2. Since Mount Ibu held its alert status as of May 16, 2024, the ash cloud created by the eruption this afternoon was the largest.

Mount Ibu is a strato-type volcano and has a peak height of 1,340 meters above sea level. Administratively included in the area of Ibu District, West Halmahera Regency, North Maluku Province.

The Geological Agency issued a Volcano Observation Notice for Aviation (VONA) warning with a red code for the North Maluku area. The VONE service to notify pilots, operators, air traffic managers, and meteorologists regarding the spread of volcanic ash for the sake of flight security. The Geological Agency asks the public not to move within a four-kilometer radius and the sectoral expansion is seven kilometers to the crater opening in the northern part of the active crater of Mount Ibu. The Geological Agency conducts visual and instrumental observations of a volcano observation post located in Gam Ici Village, Mother District, West Halmahera Regency, North Maluku.
