European Commission Threatens Microsoft Fines If It Doesn't Provide Sufficient Information About AI Risks In Bing

JAKARTA - The European Commission has threatened to fine Microsoft if it does not provide adequate information about the risks arising from the Generative AI feature in the Bing search engine on May 27.

The commission revealed on Friday 17 May that it was concerned about the spread of deep health and automated manipulation of services that could mislead voters in general elections in Europe.

They stated that they were increasing law enforcement actions on this issue, as they had not received an answer to requests for information sent on March 14.

If the deadline is not met, the commission can fine Bing up to 1% of its total annual income with a regular fine of up to 5% of its average daily income.

They can also fine companies if they provide false or misleading information.

Tech companies are required to do more to address illegal and harmful content on their platforms under the historic European Union Digital Services Act, which took effect last year.

AI's genrative is one of the risks identified by the commission for the integrity of the electoral process, especially for the upcoming elections for the European Parliament in June.
