China Calls for No Country to Obstruct Palestine's UN Membership

JAKARTA - China urges relevant countries not to create obstacles to Palestine's membership in the United Nations (UN), not to continue to oppose the international community, international justice, and human conscience, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin on Monday.

Wang made the remarks at a regular press conference when asked to explain China's position on the issue of Palestinian membership in the UN.

"Chinese representatives have comprehensively outlined our position in an interpretive speech after the vote," Wang said, noting an independent state has been a long-held aspiration of the Palestinian people, with full membership in the UN an important step in this historic process, as reported by Xinhua, May 13.

On May 10, an emergency special session of the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution by a majority vote, recognizing Palestine's qualification for full UN membership, recommending that the Security Council reconsider its implementation. Beijing co-sponsored the resolution and voted in favor.

Wang further said that supporting and advancing Palestinian independence as a sovereign state provides a strong guarantee for implementing the two-state solution and realizing lasting peace in the Middle East, which is also the strong call of the international community and the shared responsibility of all parties.

Wang also said China supports the UN Security Council in reconsidering Palestine's application to join the UN as soon as possible, in line with the terms of the resolution.

The resolution makes further arrangements for Palestinian participation in UN activities and related meetings, granting Palestinians new rights and privileges, Wang said.

According to him, this special arrangement is a remedy for the injustices that have long been suffered by the Palestinian people and a correction for the abuse of veto rights by the United States.

"We look forward to Palestine becoming a full member of the UN and enjoying full and equal rights in the UN like other member states," Wang said.
