JAKARTA - Regent Ogan Komering Ulu (OKU) South Sumatra (Sumsel), Kuryana Azis died while being treated at a hospital in Palembang. The OKU district head died after over a week of inauguration.
"I was shocked to hear the news that my father had died. Because the latest information was that his condition had improved after being treated at the Palembang hospital," said the Head of Public Relations and Protocol of the OKU Regency Government, Ferry Iswan, as quoted by Antara, Monday, March 8.
The deceased died at the age of 70 after undergoing treatment at Charitas Hospital because he was suspected of being exposed to COVID-19. The deceased was buried in Tanjung Kemala Village, OKU Regency.
OKU Regent Kuryana Azis was elected with Johan Anuar in the 2020 OKU Regional Election. At the time of the inauguration, Kuryana was not present because he was being treated at the hospital. The inauguration was attended only by Deputy Regent Ogan Komering Ulu Johan Anuar at Griya Agung Palembang on February 26.

Director-General of Regional Autonomy of the Ministry of Home Affairs (Kemendagri) Akmal Malik, explained that the vacant position of the regent will be filled by the Regional Secretary as the daily executive (Plh). This is regulated in Articles 65-66 of Law Number 23 of 2014 concerning Regional Government.
"The government must not be empty, public services must continue to run. Article 66 states that if the regional head, deputy regional head is temporarily absent, the Regional Secretary carries out daily tasks," said Akmal, confirmed by VOI.
The regional secretary who is the acting head of the OKU district head for the longest-serving is 15 days. The Ministry of Home Affairs is also waiting for a suggestion from the South Sumatra governor to propose 3 names as the acting regent of OKU.
"Later (from the proposed 3 names, red) the minister will decide. Meanwhile, the Regional Secretary has a maximum of 15 days (on duty) with limited authority,” said Akmal referring to the provisions of Article 213-214 of the Regional Government Law.
