BYD Showcases Ocean-M Concept On China Auto Show 2024, Seize European Consumers?

JAKARTA - BYD, an automotive giant from China, looked stunning at the 2024 China Auto Show. In addition to showing off a number of its flagship models, including the luxury sedan Denza Z9GT which will compete with products from Mercedes-Benz, BYD also introduced the Ocean-M concept. This concept car is an early picture of the production car that will launch in the third quarter of this year.

Ocean-M comes with a sporty and radical hatchback design. The dimensions are slightly larger than BYD Dolphin, so the potential is more suitable to compete with VW ID.3. With the shape and appearance of the hatchback, the car seems to be specially designed to attract the European market.

On the front, the Ocean-M concept features a large front light and a firm lower bumper with a separate design around the water-intake. The fifth-pattered Velg adds to the sporty impression of this car.

Uniquely, the Ocean-M window line looks very high and goes up to the back. Although the body kit on this concept will most likely not be mass produced, the line of firmness on its body is expected to be maintained in the production version.

While on the back, there is a rear light blending under a flashy big wing.

According to a CarNewsChina report, quoted April 29, it is estimated that Ocean-M production cars will fill slots between BYD Dolphin and Seal, and will likely carry the names of other sea creatures. For the initial stage, Ocean-M will certainly be present as a pure electric car, but the PHEV version may follow later.

BYD still hasn't revealed much details about this car, even the publication of this concept car doesn't appear on BYD's social media accounts either. They only mentioned that Ocean-M will be built on a new electric platform, possibly e-platform 4.0, and positioned as the pioneer of the first rear-wheel driven electric hatchback. There is a possibility Ocean-M will also be one of the first cars to use a new second-generation blaze battery.
