9-month-old Baby Stabbing Victim At Sydney's Westfield Bondi Critical, Witness Calls Victims Rescued By Mother
JAKARTA - One of the victims of the stabbing of a man is suspected of having a mental disorderSydney shopping center, Westfield Bondi Junction, before being shot deadis a nine-month-old baby.The baby was rescued by his mother, Ashlee Good, who was also a victim by the perpetrator named Joel Cauchi (40)."Her mother was stabbed and her mother came with her baby and threw her at me and (I) carried her baby," a man told Nine News.Good died in the incident. One of the dead witnesses said Good managed to give the baby to eyewitnesses moments after he was injured.The nine-month-old girl is now "experiencing surgery overnight and is currently in critical condition and in the ICU," Health Minister Ryan Park told ABC news."Now, we certainly hope he can get through this, but it's still a long way to go."Joel Cauchi made the crowded Westfield Bondi Junction complex panic on Saturday when he started stabbing people with long knives. Five women and a man were killed. Others, including a baby, were injured.Authorities said the attack was most likely "related to the mental health of the individuals involved".In a Sunday update, New South Wales Assistant Police Commissioner Anthony Cooke said they were still trying to tell the families of the victims."Two of them don't seem to have families in Australia," he told reporters.
He said Cauchi, who came from Queensland, was previously known to the police and had purchased storage units in Sydney. The assistant commissioner reiterated that the attacker did not appear to be motivated by "certain iideology or motivation".
