The official purchase decision was made after the two signed the New Electric Railroad Facilities Procurement Cooperation Contract (KRL) on January 31, 2024 in Beijing, China. The signing was also witnessed by the President Director of KAI Didiek Hartantyo.

Then, which more expensive is the import of KRL from Japan or China?

He said the procurement of three new series of KRL imported from CRRC Sifang, China had a total investment of around IDR 783 billion. Meanwhile, if it is detailed, the price per trainset from China reaches IDR 261 billion.

"The procurement of this new KRL facility is a fulfillment of the number of KRL facilities in accordance with the needs of the Jabodetabek Commuter Line user service in 2024-2025 which has reached almost 1 million users per day," said Asdo from an official statement quoted on Friday, February 2.

Asdo said that the procurement of the new KRL facilities was also part of a series of fulfillment of the Jabodetabek KRL facilities discussed at the Coordination Meeting which was chaired directly by the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment (Menko Marves) Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan in June 2023.

The meeting was also attended by the Ministry of SOEs, Ministry of Transportation, Ministry of Industry, BPKP, PT INKA, and other stakeholders.

"Procurement of new KRL means of imports is also the last process of the series of procurement of KRL facilities by KAI Commuter according to the results of the Coordination Meeting chaired by the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries," he explained.

Previously, KAI's Director of Strategic Planning and Business Development John Roberto said PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) or KAI as the parent of KCI had received a profile of train prices from one of the Japanese companies, JR East.

He said, based on the price proposal given by JR East dated June 30, 2023.

He said, a trainset consisting of 12 carriages was priced at IDR 255.6 billion.

"Total untuk impor 3 trainset baru dari Jepang ini kami membutuhkan Rp678,8 miliar," ujar John dalam Rapat Hampuan Dengan Komisi V DPR RI, di Kompleks Parliament, Jakarta, Selasa, 19 September 2023.
