JAKARTA - An electric car manufacturer from China, BYD, is preparing to launch its newest model, Seal U, in the European market, and is expected to be a formidable competitor to Volkswagen ID.4 and Tesla.

According to the ArenaEV report on Wednesday, January 31, the brother of the Seal model, which was first introduced last year, offers a wide dimension for five passengers, with a length of 4,785 mm, a width of 1,890 mm, and a height of 1,668 mm, as well as a wheelbase of 2,765 mm.

In the European market, there are two variants offered, namely Comfort (base version) at a price of 41,990 euros or around IDR 717 million, and a premium version at a price of 44,990 euros or around IDR 768 million.

Seal U comes with two battery options. The first version uses 71.8 kWh of battery with a WLTP range of 420 km, while the second version uses 87 kWh of battery with an impressive range of 500 km. Both of these variants use an LFP battery with an 800 volt configuration.

While the Seal sedan focuses more on the sporty driving experience, Seal U emphasizes greater flexibility, comfort, and space. This car is equipped with a single permanent magnetic sync motor that produces a torque of 160 kW and 330 Nm, only driving the front doubles. Seal U is capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/hour in 9.3 seconds and reaches a top speed of 175 km/hour.

In terms of charging, Seal U is equipped with three phase 11 kW for AC charging, and DC fast charging support with 115 kW or 140 kW as standard. Charging from 30 to 80 percent takes about 27 minutes in the last case. In addition, Seal U supports V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) technology, allowing it to provide power to external devices.

Practicality is the main focus of this model, offering a 552 liter baggage volume that can be expanded to 1,440 liters with a folded back seat. The car is also equipped with wireless charging for phones and four USB ports, providing comfort for rear passengers.

The delivery of BYD Seal U in Europe is scheduled to begin in February, with six exterior color choices and two interior color schemes. BYD provides factory guarantees for six years or up to 150,000 km. BYD also guarantees 70 percent battery capacity for eight years or a distance of 200,000 km, and provides eight-year electric motor warranty.
