IMD Research Reveals Two Supporting Factors For Increasing Indonesia's Digital Competitiveness

JAKARTA - Compared to 2022, Indonesia's digital competitiveness has increased by six places to 45, from previously ranked 51th out of 64 countries in the world.

In fact, research by the World Digital Competitiveness Ranking (WDCR 2023) conducted by the International International Institute for Management Development (IMD) found that Indonesia had increased 11 places in the last five years.

According to IMD, there are two main factors that have succeeded in boosting Indonesia's digital competitiveness. First, aggressive investment growth that has succeeded in increasing Indonesia's digital readiness, especially in the telecommunications, banking and venture capital sectors.

Furthermore, the second factor is the growth of technology entrepreneurs to support Indonesia's technological readiness in the future.

To continue to encourage digital competitiveness, the research states that Indonesia needs to increase internet speed. Because currently, internet speed in Indonesia is in the 62nd place out of a total of 64 countries studied.

Furthermore, Professor Arturo Bris, Director of the IMD World Competitiveness Center (WCC) who made the research also stated that Indonesia needs to increase grants for the latest technology patents (high-tech) and increase workers' numbers with special technology expertise and knowledge, to improve digital competitiveness.

"Based on a lot of research we have done, increasing investment in education and training has proven to increase digital competitiveness because it meets the existing labor market needs. In the future, we estimate that there will be a surge in demand for workers related to technology and AI (artificial intelligence)," added Bris.
