OpenAI CEO: Energy Breakthrough Is Needed For The Future Of Artificial Intelligence

JAKARTA - OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on Tuesday 16 January stated that a breakthrough in the energy sector is needed to support the development of artificial intelligence (AI) in the future, which will consume much more power than previously predicted.

At the Bloomberg event on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum's annual meeting at Davos, Altman said that environmentally friendly energy sources, especially nuclear fusion or solar panels and cheaper energy storage, were necessary steps to support AI's sustainability.

"There is no way to achieve it without breakthroughs," he said. "This motivates us to invest more in nuclear fusion."

In 2021, Altman personally donated $375 million to US private nuclear fusion company Helon Energy, which has since signed a deal to provide energy to Microsoft in the coming years. Microsoft is OpenAI's biggest financial supporter and provides its computable resources for artificial intelligence.

Altman expressed his hope that the world would accept nuclear fusion and nuclear fission as a source of energy
