Kaspersky Reveals Cyber Crime Trends In Asia Pacific Region In 2024

JAKARTA - Driven by rapid digitalization movements in Asia Pacific (APAC) and geopolitical friction, experts at Kaspersky expect a cyber threat landscape to come in the region by 2024.

The global cybersecurity company revealed that, in particular, the dangers of phishing, fraud, data breaches, and geopolitical-motivated cyberattacks seem to continue to target organizations and individuals in the Asia Pacific.

"With digitalization efforts including technology adoption such as digital payments, Super Apps, IoT, smart cities, and now Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), cybersecurity will be the main key to ensuring all defenses in the region against potential destructive cyberattacks," Vitaly Kamluk said Head of the Asia Pacific Research Center, Research and Analysis Team Global (GreAT) at Kaspersky.

In cybersecurity cases, Kaspersky experts have seen that cyber espionage is still the main goal of Asian groups. And this trend will continue in 2024 due to geopolitical tensions.

Meanwhile, specifically in Southeast Asia (Singapore, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Indonesia), online frauds such as investment fraud, romance, crypto fraud, money laundering, and illegal gambling must also be watched out for.

Nonetheless, Kaspersky argues that the scale of online fraud and phishing attacks in Southeast Asia will continue to increase in the coming years due to the lack of technical and legal knowledge of many people involved in the attacks, from operators to victims.
