Previously, researchers had warned of a possible increase in shark attacks in Hawaii from October to December, according to the Water Resources Division, part of the Department of Land and Natural Resouces of the State of Hawaii.
It is known, shark attacks, especially fatal ones, are rare. On average, sharks kill five people per year in an unreasonable attack, CNN previously reported. Possibility of being fatally attacked by one of the carnivorous fish is less than 1 in 4 million, according to the International Shark Attack File. Experts attribute many shark bites to case misidentifiables, particularly in low visibility waters.
According to Hawaii State Department of Land and Natural Resouces website records, the last fatal shark "meeting" in Hawaii occurred when a person who was snorkeling was killed in Maui on December 8, 2022.
