Concerned About Conditions In Gaza, UN Team Leader: I've Never Seen Such Suffering

JAKARTA - UN humanitarian aid workers are concerned about the conditions in the Gaza Strip, Palestine, when it details the terrible conditions there, suffering is ubiquitous, there is no safe place for displaced civilians.

The head of the Gaza team at the United Nations Office for Humanitarian Affairs Coordination (OCHA) Gemma Connell said she had witnessed a high level of destruction in the enclave over the past month.

Many people who arrived in southern Gaza "have fled not just once, not twice, but six or seven times," he told CNN, as quoted January 5.

Connell further described the condition of despair in the northern region.

"Throughout my humanitarian career, I have never seen the level of suffering, despair, and shortcomings experienced by those across from the checkpoint," Connell broke out.

"No food, no water, and very few medical supplies," he said.

Connell further rejected Israel's accusations, which said Palestinian refugee bodies at the United Nations were "delaying" as aid flowed to Gaza from two southern border crossings.

"The fact that we are all here to wake up every day, trying to get help, is positive evidence that we are not buying time. There are many challenges," he said, citing various checks that aid trucks had to go through.

Connell also said more attention should be given to the fate of the 2.2 million people in Gaza who desperately need help.

"My biggest fear is that the world does not see Gaza's people as humans as they are," he said.

"But every day, that's what I see, are humans in Gaza and the huge and devastating death toll from this war on humans," he concluded.
