The departure of a loved one can affect feelings, how to behave, and what to think. This kind of reaction is called mourning. This is a natural response to loss. Grief doesn't mean you have to feel certain emotions. People can also mourn in a different way.

People often believe they have to feel certain things, said Dr. Wendy Lichtenthal, a psychologist at the Memorial Sloan-Ketering Cancer Center.

"But such a'must' can cause bad feelings because you feel very bad. It's very important for you to allow yourself to grieve and let yourself feel whatever you feel. Be loving and kind to yourself," he added.

Grief is the process of releasing and learning to accept life with loss. The amount of time it takes to do this is different for everyone.
