DFB Pokal 2023/2024: Dortmund Follow In Eintracht Frankfurt's Footsteps Failed To Quarter Finals
JAKARTA - The round of 16 of the 2023/2024 DFB Pokal brought together the Bundesliga top team duel between VfB Stuttgart vs Borussia Dortmund at the Mercedes-Benz Arena, Thursday, December 7, 2023.
The match was tight. The hosts control 55 percent of the ball compared to Dortmund's 45 percent.
However, Stuttgart created more chances by packing 17 shots, seven of which were on target.
Dortmund only released 11 shots and only four of them headed for the goal.
From the start of the match, Dortmund took the initiative to attack first. A golden opportunity was created through Marcel Sabitzer. Unfortunately, his shot from outside the penalty box still hit the bar.
Stuttgart responded shortly thereafter. Chris Fuhrich's hull bait was successfully headed by Deniz Undav. Luckily Dortmund goalkeeper, Gregor Kobel, was still able to parry the ball.
No goals were created in the first half. The 0-0 score lasted until halftime.
In the second half, Stuttgart threatened the visitors more often.

The first chance of the second half was born when the game had only been running for five minutes. Taking advantage of Matswas bad control, Mazimilian Mittelstadt won the ball.
A short pass was quickly created between Fuhrich and Undav before releasing a through ball to Sehrou Guirassy. Unfortunately, Guirassy, who just faced Kobel, failed to convert into a goal.
Four minutes later, Guirassy this time did not waste his chances. Goals started with Enzo Millot's acceleration past two Dortmund players before passing to Guirassy in the penalty box.
Guirassy immediately struck the ball with a low shot that slid between Kobel's feet.
Dotmund could actually equalize the score through Jamie Bynoe-Gittens in the 62nd minute. However, the goal was disallowed by the referee because it first went offside after reviewing the video assistant referee (VAR).
Instead of scoring the equalizer goal, Dortmund conceded again. Silas kept Stuttgart away in the 77th minute.
Starting from Mittelstadt's action, he then sent a through ball to Silas and immediately cheated on the substitute.
The 2-0 score for Stuttgart lasted until the game was over. They qualify for the quarter-finals.
Meanwhile, Dortmund followed Eintracht Frankfurt, another Bundesliga team that failed to reach the last eight of the 2023/2024 DFB Pokal.
