Ministers-Heads Of Regions For The Presidential Election Are Not Required To Resign
JAKARTA - Ministers, members of the legislature to regional heads are not required to resign from their positions if they run as presidential and vice presidential candidates in the 2024 presidential election.
This is stated in Government Regulation Number 53 of 2023 which was stipulated by President Joko Widodo on November 21, 2023.
Article 18 paragraph (1) of the PP explains that state officials nominated by political parties or coalitions of political parties participating in the general election as presidential candidates or vice presidential candidates must resign from their positions, except for the President, Vice President, leaders and members of the MPR, leaders and members of the DPR, leaders and members of the DPD, ministers and officials at the ministerial level, governors, deputy governors, regents, deputy regents, mayors, and deputy mayors.
However, ministers and ministerial-level officials nominated by political parties or coalitions of political parties participating in the general election as presidential or vice presidential candidates as referred to in paragraph (1) must obtain approval and leave permits from the President.
Presidential Special Staff Coordinator AAGN Ari Dwipayana in his separate statement stated, based on this provision, the decision to resign or whether or not the minister or regional head when running for the presidential election was an individual choice.

"The individual choices of each public official are given space to resign. But if he is still in office, he means he must follow the rules related to the campaign arrangements that have been regulated by law," Ari told reporters in Jakarta, Friday.
As previously reported, the PP also stipulates that ministers, ministerial and regional heads at the level can carry out campaign leave in the 2024 General Election.
The condition is that the person concerned is a presidential or vice presidential candidate; has the status of a member of a political party; or is a member of a campaign team or implementing a campaign that has been registered with the General Elections Commission (KPU).
