Starting Today, Democrats And Republicans Agree On A Structure For Donald Trump's Impeachment Trial
JAKARTA - The United States Senate (US) is preparing to hold a historic impeachment hearing on Tuesday, February 9 local time, where they will try former President Donald Trump on charges of inciting a rebellion that led to riots at Capitol Hill, Washington DC on January 6.
It is a historic occurrence because, for the first time, a former president is undergoing an impeachment trial. And, also for the first time, a US President has faced an attempted impeachment, as this was brought up at the end of his term.
The structure of the trial has also been agreed upon by the Democrat Party as the majority, and the Republicans as a minority. Including Donald Trump's personal office, Donald Trump's legal team is satisfied with the structure of the trial.
"The trial will open on Tuesday with a four-hour debate and then a vote on the constitutionality of the trial, given Trump's former president status", wrote a statement from the Office of the US Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.
"The leadership of the impeachment trial and Trump's defense team each have 16 hours to present their arguments. If you want to call witnesses, the Senate will vote on whether to allow that", the statement continued.
As in Donald Trump's previous impeachment trial, this second impeachment trial will also give all members of the US Senate time to ask questions and considerations.
"This trial gives sufficient time for senators to review the case and argue, from each side", said US Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell who was satisfied with the structure of the trial that was considered fair.
