The panel of judges in the trial of the 2022 University of Lampung (Unila) New Student Admissions (PMB) bribery case sentenced the former Chancellor of Unila Prof. Karomani to 10 years in prison.
The verdict of the defendant for accepting the new student (PMB) Unila line Mandiri 2022 was read out by the Panel of Judges at the Tanjungkarang Corruption Court, Bandar Lampung which was chaired by Lingga Setiawan, and Member Judges Aria Veronika and Edi Purbanus on Thursday.
"The trial, sentenced the defendant to 10 years in prison and a fine of 400 million rupiah, provided that if the fine is not paid, it will be replaced with imprisonment for 4 months," said Chief Judge Lingga Setiawan when reading the verdict reported by ANTARA, Thursday, May 25.
In addition to the main sentence, the panel of judges also gave an additional penalty to Karomani, by having to pay a replacement money of 8 billion 75 million rupiah which must be paid no later than one month after the decision has permanent force or commitment.
"If it is not paid, then the property, the convict will be confiscated by the prosecutor to be confiscated and auctioned off to cover the replacement money. And if property is not sufficient to cover the substitute sentence, it will be sentenced to imprisonment for 2 years," he said.
Before deciding the sentence, the Panel of Judges first considered things that were burdensome and mitigating, for caromani.
The aggravating thing is that as a rector does not support the government's program in eradicating corruption.
"While the mitigating thing is that the person concerned has performed himself in the world of education for a short time, his services should not be ignored, then admit all his mistakes and have never been punished," he said.
In his verdict, the Panel of Judges stated that the defendant was proven and convincingly guilty by violating Article 12 letter b in conjunction with Article 18 of the Republic of Indonesia Law Number 31 of 1999 concerning the Eradication of Criminal Acts of Corruption in the first indictment.
Previously, the panel of judges in the trial of the 2022 University of Lampung (Unila) New Student Admissions (PMB) bribery case chaired by Achmad Rifai also sentenced former Vice Chancellor 1 Unila Heryandi and former Senate Chairperson Unila M Basri to 4 years and 6 months in prison.
