Tencent Mass Production Of His Canghai Video Transcoding Chip

JAKARTA - Chinese tech giant Tencent Holdings announced the homemade Canghai Video Transcoding chip is now in mass production and is used for Cloud Gaming services to Live Streaming Videos.

Shenzhen-based company, known for its popular messaging platform WeChat, said in an online published post that tens of thousands of its Canghai chips, which were first disclosed in 2021, had been used by clients in various fields, from cloud gaming to live streaming videos.

"This Canghai chip focuses on breaking the difficult triangles of high image quality, low latent, and low cost in video coding and decoding," the company said in the post.

Tencent, best known as a software company, revealed three homemade chips in 2021, joining other Chinese technology companies in responding to Beijing's call to help China develop its own semiconductor industry amid rising sanctions from the United States.

Apart from Canghai, Tencent has also designed an artificial intelligence chip called Zixiao and a network interface controller chip called Xuanling.

"Tencent has long-term plans to conduct research and development as well as investment in semiconductors," the company said, "Some chips have entered the market on a large scale."

The company says Zixiao's artificial intelligence inference chip, which aims to increase computing efficiency, has been implemented in internal business management.

Meanwhile, its Xuanling chip is now helping the company "Build the next generation of high-performance network infrastructure."
