President Zelensky Fires Ukraine's Senior Military Commander In The East Contested Region With Russia

JAKARTA - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday sacked a senior military commander who helped lead the battle against Russian troops in the hotly contested east, but did not give a reason for the dismissal.

In a decree, President Zelensky announced the dismissal of Eduard Moskalyov as commander of the Ukrainian joint forces, which were involved in the fighting in the Donbas region, reported by Reuters, February 27

President Zelensky mentioned Moskalyov in his daily address on Friday when listing military commanders he has spoken to. Moskalyov himself has held the post since March 2022, shortly after Russia invaded Ukraine.

Neither the joint forces Facebook nor Twitter accounts made any mention of the dismissal.

It is known that Russian troops are concentrated on carrying out attacks in order to seize the two eastern regions of Ukraine that make up the Donbas.

Pro-Moscow units focused their efforts on the city of Bakhmut, carrying out repeated attacks despite suffering what Ukrainian and Western officials say was a heavy loss of life.

Meanwhile, President Zelensky has in recent weeks described the military situation in the east as difficult and painful.

Separately, in a Facebook post, the general staff of the Ukrainian armed forces said Russian troops had carried out several failed attacks in the Bakhmut area on Sunday.
