Heavy Rain Accompanied by Tidal Sea Water, Flood Hits Batam, City Government Lowers Heavy Equipment

BATAM - The City Government (Pemkot) of Batam, Riau Islands (Kepri), has deployed heavy equipment to accelerate flood management in the local area.

Head of the Department of Highways and Water Resources (DBMSDA) of Batam City, Yumasnur said, in addition to using heavy equipment, his party also assigned a special team to clean clogged drainage.

"The rain is very heavy, besides that the sea conditions are also high so that it hampers the flow of water into the sea. They (the team) are in the field now", said Yumasnur in Batam, Riau Islands, quoted from Antara, Thursday, October 6.

Today, heavy rain poured down on Batam City, causing several locations to become flooded, including the Matching Area, Nagoya, Tiban Kampung, and several other housing estates.

Yumasnur explained that the Nagoya Batam area is a flood point that often occurs because its location is close to the sea.

"There are several causes of flooding, namely what was previously a water catchment area, but buildings were built. Second, Batam is not much different in height from sea level, so it affects the tides. Then there is also clogged drainage. The effect is the intensity of rainfall. too high", he said.

Furthermore, Yumasnur admitted that the Batam City Government made a re-collection of flood points as an effort to anticipate. This is the target of the Batam City Government's Bina Marga and Water Resources Service (DBMSDA) in dealing with flooding in its area.

"Because DBMSDA has a target to reduce existing flood points. Even if there are new points, we will keep updating. Due to development, for example", he said.
