Yogyakarta Intensive Organic Waste Reduction Through Biopori
YOGYAKARTA - The Yogyakarta City Environment Agency (DLH) continues to strive to reduce organic waste that is disposed of at the Piyungan Final Disposal Site, one of which is the biopori method which will be initiated through a waste bank.
"Efforts to reduce organic waste can be carried out using various methods, one of which is biopore, which we will do by utilizing the 2022 budget amendment," said Yogyakarta City Environment Agency Head Sugeng Darmanto in Yogyakarta, Monday, September 26.
According to him, the reduction of organic waste with the biopore method will be carried out on a household basis starting from waste bank customers.
The biopori will be placed near the kitchen so that the organic waste left over from the kitchen can go directly into the biopori hole and will be processed into compost.
"So, it is no longer dumped into the Piyungan Final Disposal Site (TPA)," he said as quoted by Antara.
Based on the data, of about 360 tons of waste from the city of Yogyakarta that is dumped every day to the Piyungan landfill, about 60 percent of it is organic waste which is dominated by kitchen waste.
In addition to using the biopori method, management efforts to reduce organic waste can be carried out in various ways, such as composter, losida (kitchen scraps), to maggot.
In the 2022 budget amendment, DLH Yogyakarta City will also strengthen organic waste processing facilities at the Nitikan 2 Temporary Waste Disposal Site to be equalized with Nitikan 1.
Meanwhile, in 2023, DLH Yogyakarta City plans a budget allocation to support urban villages in processing waste, each kelurahan is IDR 15 million.

“The funds can be used to treat waste with methods that are adapted to conditions in each region. Because not all regions are suitable for one type of organic waste processing method,” he said.
In addition, one of the policies that will be pursued is the use of public open space as a location for processing organic waste. "The area of Yogyakarta is limited, so what can be done is to use every corner for organic waste management," he said.
If the reduction of organic waste can be done, then the financing that must be issued by the City of Yogyakarta for waste management at the Piyungan TPA can be reduced, said Sugeng Darmanto.
