Playing Golf Is Canelo Alvarez's Unique Way To Learn To Speak English

JAKARTA - Many people have little tricks or habits to help them learn a new language. However, few are as unusual as boxer Canelo Alvarez.

Canelo is one of the best boxers in the world today and a big name in the sport. He is certainly multi-talented, as he is also fluent in English.

To learn these skills, she didn't follow the conventional route of attending classes or using online resources like most people do. Canelo uses a different sport instead - golf.

Canelo is from Guadalajara, Mexico. While speaking to local media ahead of his fight with Dmitry Bivol earlier this month, he explained how he became a fluent English speaker.

He did try the conventional route but realized he needed something more practical to really stick with the language.

"I have never studied English, I tried for about a month but in reality it didn't work," he said, quoted by Marca, Monday, May 23.

"I always train with my golf buddies. I practice when I'm there and I speak a lot of English.

"Now, if I make a mistake or not, it doesn't matter.

"I tried to do it and I think that's what helped you in the end."

Speaking English has certainly been beneficial to Canelo's career, as by giving interviews in the United States who are fluent in English, he has developed a huge fan base that spreads wider than just his native Mexico.

"Now I speak more English with my friends, they tell me that I speak well," he added.

"They made me more confident doing it. If I made a mistake I told them 'let's see, try speaking Spanish' and I ended up beating them."
