JAKARTA - The New York Times (NYT) Games has surprisingly bought the game Wordle, a popular game that gives players six chances to guess a five-letter word every day.

With this acquisition, NYT will add puzzle games to their wordplay portfolio such as The Crossword, The Mini, and Spelling Bee. It is known, as of December 2021, NYT already has more than one million subscriptions to its Games division.

"NYT remains focused on being an essential subscription for every English-speaking person who wants to understand and engage with the world. NYT Games is a key part of that strategy. Wordle will now play a part in that everyday experience, giving millions more people around the world a reason others to turn to NYT for their daily news and necessities of life," the acquisition announced.

"We have no plans for the future of this game. Right now, we are focused on creating added value for our existing audience, while also introducing our existing games to all new audiences who have already shown their love for word games," said Executive Director at NYT, Jordan Cohen.

Who Made Wordle?

Is Josh Wardle, a software engineer based in Brooklyn, USA. He was so fond of browsing Reddit that he released the game there in October 2021, and it quickly became phenomenal. Millions of people now play Wordle every day.

"I'd be lying if I said this wasn't a bit of an exaggeration. After all, I'm only one person, and it's important to me that, as Wordle grows, Wordle continues to provide great experiences for everyone," Wardle said in a post on Twitter.

After this acquisition, both NYT and Wordle they want to entertain more puzzle solvers every day, especially during these anxious times.
