German Cybersecurity Watchdog Can't Find Ban On Certain Phrases On Xiaomi Products

JAKARTA – Germany's federal cybersecurity watchdog, the BSI, has found no evidence of a sensor function in phones manufactured by China's Xiaomi Corp. This was explained by a spokesperson for BSI on Thursday, January 13.

Previously, Lithuania's state cybersecurity agency said in September that Xiaomi phones had the built-in ability to detect and censor terms such as "Free Tibet", "Long live Taiwan independence", or "democracy movement".

the BSI then began an investigation following the allegations, which lasted several months.

"As a result, the BSI was unable to identify an anomaly that requires further investigation or other action," a BSI spokesperson said, quoted by Reuters.

Previously, Xiaomi mobile phone products marketed in Europe had been boycotted in several countries. The reason is that there are several phrases in the cellphone that allegedly remove keywords that are contrary to Chinese government policies.

So far, the Chinese government does not recognize Taiwan's independence and considers the territory to be part of its country. Likewise for the Tibetan region, which is considered an integral part of China.
