Continued Squid Game 2, Director Wants To Meet Audience's Expectations

JAKARTA - The director of the Squid Game series, Hwang Dong-Hyuk, confirmed that there are plans for a second season. In his latest interview, he admitted that he had started to think about what could be developed for the story.

Hwang Dong-Hyuk revealed that the end of the first season of Squid Game was not what the audience saw.

As is known, Gi Hun (Lee Jung Jae) as the winner of the Squid Game decided not to board the plane to the United States. He chose to return after hearing the deadly game was about to start again. The audience also guessed whether Gi Hun participated in the Squid Game or not.

“Actually we considered two scenarios for the ending. There was one alternative where Gi Hun would get on the plane and leave. Then of course, when he chooses to come back and walk towards the camera," explained Hwang Dong-Hyuk.

The production team is thinking about whether Gi Hun looks selfish if he puts himself before his family. The ending of the Squid Game doesn't show Gi Hun's true happiness either.

"We came to the conclusion that the questions we wanted to ask couldn't be done if he went to the plane," he said. Dong Hyuk also let the audience guess the meaning of the last scene.

On the other hand, he is also aware of fan-made and widely talked about theories. “I watched YouTube and saw all the fans imagining what season two would be like, and their imaginations were so wild.”

“If there is a second season, I think I will continue the existing storyline. And I hope it can meet the expectations of fans," he continued.

However, Hwang Dong-Hyuk still sticks to the original story. Currently, he is still developing story ideas from the first season of Squid Game. Netflix has yet to confirm the news of the second season even though Dong Hyuk has announced it.
