Internet Penetration In Indonesia Increases But Slow, Why?

JAKARTA - The number of internet penetration in Indonesia has now reached 78.19 percent, or around 215 million people. This number increased by 1.17 percent compared to last year's 210 million people.

Chairman of the Indonesian Internet Service Providers Association (APJII) Muhammad Arif Angga predicts that next year, there will be an increase in internet penetration of just one to two percent.

"Actually, from 2022-2023 it will only increase by around one point a percentage point, only 5 million people. "Maybe in 2024 it won't be that significant, just one to two percent is estimated," said Arif after the BDDC JST1 Topping Off ceremony recently.

Even though the numbers continue to increase, this increase can be said to be quite slow. Commenting on this, Arif said that the increase in internet penetration had previously increased rapidly during the pandemic.

“Actually, it was because it was bought up during the pandemic. "During the pandemic, the increase went from 178 million people to 210 million people, an increase of 40 to 50 million people," explained Arif further.

Arif also said that another reason was the uneven distribution of internet infrastructure throughout Indonesia. So, that is what causes a slight increase in internet penetration.

"But after this pandemic, the increase has increased slightly because the infrastructure is not all neat, so it is still progressing," said the Chairman of APJII.

However, Arif remains optimistic that in 2024 there will be an increase in internet penetration to five to seven million people.
