Apple Will Change SMS Service On IPhone With RCS Next Year

JAKARTA On Thursday, November 16, Apple announced that the iPhone device will soon support theRich Communication Services (RCS) system to replace SMS services.

First reported by 9to5mac, Apple will add this feature next year after launching the latest software. They will use the RCS Universal Profile standard published by the GSM Association.

We believe RCS Universal Profile will offer a better interoperability experience when compared to SMS or MMS. It will work alongsideMessage, which will continue to be the best and safest messaging experience for Apple users," said Apple spokesperson for the 9to5mac.

By using RCS, iPhone users do not need to send messages via SMS or MMS to Android users. There is no further information about this service, but the feature is said to be similar to iMessage.

RCS can activate encryption support, use read message signs, send high-quality images and videos, and much more. RCS also supports location delivery, just like iMessage.

Some time ago, the European Commission investigated iMessage to determine whether the service was properly used as a gatekeeper or core platform service. If iMessage is included in the gateway service list, Apple must comply with regulations in the European Union.

Based on the rules of the Digital Market Law (DMA), companies that are used as gatekeepers must make their services operate with other platforms. Seeing this provision, Apple may be under pressure.

What's more, Google and Samsung are trying to encourage Apple to use RCS. It's not clear whether the two companies' push was successful, but RCS could be a good solution to replace paid SMS.
