Meanwhile, according to the Dipole Mode Index (DMI), the IOD is the size of the sea surface temperature anomaly gradient (SST) between the western equatorial Indian Ocean (50E-70E and 10S-10N) and the southeastern equatorial Indian Ocean (90E-110E and 10S-0N).

Dipol Collapse in the western Indian Ocean and the eastern Indian Ocean can drive convection and change the circulation of Walker's Cell.

Changes in temperature in the Indian Ocean generally move in line with the South Oscillation phase of El Nino (ENSO), but there are times when dipoles can appear on their own during neutral ENSO.
