Google Failed To Create AR Glasses Competing Apple Vision Pro And Meta Quest 3

JAKARTA - Google is claimed to have resigned to release a new pair of Augmented Reality (AR) glasses. A report said this step was a result of a massive layoff (PHK) some time ago.

Citing three anonymous sources from Google, the development of glasses dubbed Project Iris has been abandoned after a wave of layoffs and company restructuring.

In fact, many Google employees are also frustrated by the continuous changes to the strategy for Iris. This is what causes the low spirit among the team.

Furthermore, in 2021, the head of Google's AR/VR Clay Bavor left the company which made it even more difficult to continue the project, and was eventually canceled.

It is known, Project Iris has been developed for several years which is described as a pair of Android-based ski glasses.

The glasses turned out to be a joint project with Samsung and Qualcomm. Iris is reportedly designed as an AR glasses with the ability to generate a realistic Mixed Reality (MR) experience.

However, Google's resignation from Iris does not mean the company is giving up on AR/VR technology. In the future, the tech giant will focus more on developing software platforms for AR, such as Android XR.

With this platform, developers can create AR experiences for a variety of devices, including smartphones, tablets, and headsets. In addition, a series of new features will also be presented for Maps and Geospatial Creator applications.
