Toyota has announced their plans to produce the innovative steel-by-wire technology by the end of 2024. This technology was previously introduced to the Lexus RZ electric car.

This Steer-by-wire offers a larger steering ratio, which is 200 degrees, compared to the conventional steering wheel which only has 150 degrees. This makes the driver feel more responsive steering without losing maneuverability at low speeds.

According to Autocar's report, Wednesday, November 1, the system known as 'One Motion Grip' aims to provide a more intuitive driving experience for users. Toyota also involves various internal and external parties to test this system, ensuring convenience and security as drivers operate it.

Toyota plans to bring this steering-by-wire technology to the Lexus RZ and Toyota bZ4X models with future over-the-air (OTA) software updates, although some regulations in various regions have not allowed the use of this technology.

In Europe, a special certification program has been created for the steering-by-wire system, which removes the need for mechanical relationships between steering wheels and wheels, a pre-existing requirement. The system is legal in Japan, but there is no similar law in the United States. It is likely that Britain will adopt the EU law, although this has not been officially announced.

The plan is for Toyota to implement this technology on their future electric vehicles (EVs), including the Lexus LF-ZC concept which was recently exhibited at the Japan Mobility Show (JMS) 2023.

Simon Humphries, chief designer of Lexus, revealed that this system opens up opportunities to design more innovative interiors on upcoming models.

"With the use of the steering-by-wire, we can remove interior panels that block the view, provide greater design freedom. With at least a mechanical component to hide, we can create a more free design," Simon said.
