YOGYAKARTA Educational institutions such as universities or universities can now be used as a campaign venue for presidential and vice presidential candidates in the 2024 election. This is in accordance with the decision of the Constitutional Court (MK) Number 65/PUU-XXI/2023 concerning Campaigns in Educational Places. Campaigns at educational places can be carried out as long as the presidential candidates receive invitations or get permission from the chancellor to carry out the campaign.

"So it is not the desire of prospective participants (elections) to come to campus, but rather invited by the rector or by the organizers. The point is to be invited by the rector," said member of the Election Supervisory Body (Bawaslu) Puadi on Friday, September 8, 2023, quoted from the official website of the Indonesian Bawaslu.

The second campaign requirement on campus is that election participants who are invited to campus do not carry campaign props or props.

"You can campaign on campus, but you have to have permission from the chancellor and you can't bring attributes," said Puadi.

Puadi said the 2024 election campaign stage would be held for 75 days, starting from November 28, 2023 to February 10, 2024.

Meanwhile, the General Election Commission (KPU) of the Republic of Indonesia stated that campaigns on campus may only be carried out on Saturdays and Sundays. This provision is contained in the draft revision of KPU Regulation (PKPU) Number 15 of 2023 concerning Campaigns that have been approved by the DPR.

Indonesian KPU commissioner August Mellas said that the 2024 election campaign on campus is only allowed on Saturdays and Sundays so that learning activities are not disrupted. The mention of Saturdays and Sundays is carried out to avoid using the word holiday.

This is because the definition of holidays is quite extensive and can include national and religious holidays.

"So we saw that it was not appropriate to open the space (election campaign on campus)," said Mellas, following the official website of the Indonesian KPU.

He added that the PKPU draft also stipulates that the campaign should only be held in educational places in the form of universities or equivalents. Campaign events should not be held in schools, from kindergarten to high school (High School). The reason is, students who are at that level are not yet old enough to choose.

"SLTA/equivalent does not (let there be a campaign) because the consideration is that not all of them have the right to vote. We get input from the Ministry of Education and Culture, Ministry of Religion, and KPAI," said Mellas.
