Three Regions In North Sulawesi Alert For Drought

MANADO - Coordinator for Observation and Information of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency of North Sulawesi Climatology Station, Chandra Buana, said the three sub-districts in the province were categorized as drought alert.

"The three sub-districts are Poigar (Balaang Mongondow Regency), as well as Bunaken District and Mapanget District in Manado City," Chandra said as quoted by ANTARA, Monday, September 4.

Alert for drought in three areas in Manado City and Bolaang Mongondow Regency because it has not received rain for more than 31 days.

Furthermore, from the Climatology Station data, as many as five sub-districts are categorized as drought alert areas where for 21 days it has never rained.

These areas are East Bolaang District and Lolak District (Bolaang Mongondow Regency), Tombariri District (Minahasa Regency, Tumpaan District (South Minahasa Regency) and Airmadidi District (North Minahasa Regency).

Currently, he said, eight of the 10 season zones in the North Sulawesi region have been dry based on rain analysis as of September 1, 2023.

"Therefore, vigilance is needed regarding the threat of drought," he said.

From the results of the analysis, data on days without rain (HTH) shows that several areas in the province of the northern tip of Sulawesi show that

experiencing successive HTH series was also more than or equal to 21 days.

Forecasts of rainfall opportunities indicate that some areas will experience very low rainfall (less than 20 mm/basis) with a chance of more than 70 percent.

"The two conditions above meet the requirements for an early warning of meteorological drought," he added.
