UN Intervention Condemns In Northern Cyprus, President Erdogan: We Can't Accept It

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the physical intervention of the United Nations peacekeeping force (UN) regarding road work in the Turkish Republic of North Cyprus (TRNC) last week was unacceptable.

"We cannot accept the physical intervention of the UN Peacekeeping force troops in the territory under TRNC sovereignty," President Erdogan said after a weekly cabinet meeting.

"It is not legal or humane to prevent Turkish Cypriots living in Pyla Village from reaching their homeland," he continued.

President Erdogan also said Turkey would continue to side with the Turkish Republic of North Cyprus, a country that was break away and only recognized by Ankara.

Earlier, clashes broke out on Friday between UN peacekeeping forces and Turkish Cyprus security personnel, as peacekeeping forces tried to prevent road repairs that began in areas that the United Nations said were part of a buffer zone under its jurisdiction.

It is known that the Turkish Cyprus Authority wants to build a road that will give Pyla/Pile residents, a village in the UN-run buffer zone, direct access to territory under the control of Turkey's Cyprus.

Turkish Cyprus authorities say the UN peacekeeping force in the region (UNFICYP) has exceeded its territory limits.

Meanwhile, Turkish Cyprus leader Ersin Tatar said the road project itself was very important.
