Ministry Of Foreign Affairs: Cases Of Trafficking In Persons In Indonesia Increase 15 Percent

JAKARTA - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu) said that cases of criminal acts of trafficking in persons (TPPO) against Indonesian migrant workers (PMI) increased by 15 percent for the period 2022-2023.

"There has been an increase in TIP cases from 2022 to 2023. Although not significantly, the number has increased by about 15 percent," said Diplomat Expert Madya Directorate of Protection for Indonesian Citizens of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Susapto Anggoro Broto as reported by ANTARA, Friday, July 14.

According to him, in 2022, the TIP cases handled by his party had reached 900 cases, with details of 637 cases originating from Southeast Asia, 245 cases in the Middle East region and 107 cases in the African continent region.

"Meanwhile, the handling of TIP related to online gambling throughout 2022 is 2,438. They are spread across Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines and Myanmar," he said.

According to him, there are three regions that are most vulnerable to domestic TIPs, namely North Sulawesi, North Sumatra and Central Java.

"For this reason, we from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs took the first action for cases that were abroad. One of them handled his return to Indonesia," he said.

To suppress the TIP case, there must be synergy between the central and regional levels.

"So far, even though there are obstacles, Alhamdulillah, we are still trying so that the victim can be facilitated to return to Indonesia," he said.
