Jokowi Will Issue A Presidential Decree On The Single Entity Of Borobudur Tourism

JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) will issue a presidential regulation (Perpres) related to the formation of a single entity with members from across ministries and institutions for the management of the Borobudur tourism area.

"The President also gave directions to immediately prepare a Presidential Decree which will determine the specific destination management organization, or a single entity for the management of the Borobudur tourism area," said Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Sandiaga Uno in a press conference after a limited meeting at the Presidential Palace complex, Jakarta, reported by ANTARA, Tuesday, June 13.

Sandi hopes that with the existence of a single entity consisting of cross-sectoral officials, the development of the Borobudur area as a super priority destination will be completed in September 2024. In this way, he also hopes that the Borobudur tourism area can help achieve the target of foreign tourist visits (tourists), namely 8.5 million foreign tourists in 2023 and 14 million foreign tourists in 2024.

"And specifically for Borobudur with conditions 42 percent of ASEAN people are Buddhist, this can be a spiritual tourist destination that can accommodate more than 20 million foreign tourists by interconnecting through built infrastructure," said Sandi.

The government has built a number of infrastructures to complement the facilities and infrastructure of the Borobudur tourism area, including Yogyakarta International Airport, toll road access, railway lines, as well as village economic centers (Balfondes) and tourist villages. Development of tourism areas is also intended to create as many as 4.4 million new jobs in 2024.

Separately, SOE Minister Erick Thohir said the Presidential Decree to be issued by President Jokowi would make the management of the Borobudur tourism area one roof between the Ministry of Religion, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology, the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, and the Ministry of SOEs.

Then a supervisory board will be formed that consists, including the Ministry of Finance and the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment.

"But TWC (PT Taman Wisata Borobudur Temple) as the manager, so how can TWC balance for the benefit of course, heritage or conservation, we know that Borobudur continues to decline, then also for religious spirituality such as the commemoration of Waisak Day yesterday, for tourism itself, and of course for education. So this is extraordinary and later there will be thorough renovations in Borobudur so that there is continuity," said Erick.
