BEBEL - The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) has mapped out the point prone to land forest fires (karhutla) in the Province of the Bangka Belitung Islands (Babel).

The head of the BPBD for the Babel Islands, Mikron Antariksa, said that forest and land fires have a high potential due to the phenomenon of El Nino and the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD).

"Currently we are mapping disaster-prone points during this dry season," he said in Pangkalpinang, Babel, Tuesday, June 13, which was confiscated by Antara.

Mikron said, based on the mapping carried out by BPBD, there were 268 forest and land fire-prone areas in 2022 in Babylon.

As for the details, there are 50 points in East Belitung (50), 49 in Pangkalpinang City, 43 in West Bangka, 44 in Central Bangka, 39 in Bangka, 25 in South Bangka and 18 in Belitung.

"It is estimated that this year's disaster-prone area will increase compared to the previous year, due to climate change in El Nino and IOD during this year's dry season," he said.

According to him, mapping disaster-prone points is very important as a step to anticipate the early outbreak of forest and land fires, drought, and other disasters, the impact of this extreme climate change.

In addition to mapping this disaster-prone area, he continued, the Babel BPBD has taken other steps in anticipating this drought, such as alerting a 24-hour quick reaction team, a clean water tank, forming a drought task force team and forest and land fires.

BPBD has also coordinated with the agriculture office to anticipate agricultural land drought, coordinate with the trade office to ensure food availability, and coordinate with district/city governments in dealing with the potential for this natural disaster.

"BNPB and BMKG have issued early warnings to all regions to take steps to anticipate the impact of this climate change phenomenon," he concluded.
