M 6.0 Earthquake Shakes Maluku, BMKG: Due To Banda Sea Plate Activities

MALUKU - Subduction activity of the Banda Sea Plate caused an earthquake with a magnitude (M) of 6.0 in the Maluku region on Sunday, June 4 at around 07.25 WIB.

Head of the Earthquake and Tsunami Center of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Daryono said the results of the BMKG epicenter analysis of the earthquake were at coordinates 6.92 South Latitude and 130.47 East Longitude.

According to him, the epicenter of the earthquake was in the sea about 149 km northwest of West Southeast Maluku at a depth of 118 km.

Based on the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, he said, the earthquake was a type of medium earthquake that occurred due to the subduction activity of the Banda Sea Plate.

"The results of the analysis of the source mechanism show that the earthquake has a mechanism for decreasing fault movement," he said, confiscated by Antara.

He conveyed that the earthquake was felt in the Saumlaki area on the MMI II intensity scale, the vibrations were felt by several people and caused light objects that were hung to sway.

The modeling results show that the earthquake that occurred in the part of the Banda Sea did not have the potential to cause a tsunami.

Based on the results of BMKG monitoring, until 07.45 WIB there was no aftershock activity after the 6.0 magnitude earthquake on Sunday at 07.25 WIB in the Maluku region.

Daryono appealed to the public to avoid buildings that were cracked or damaged by the earthquake and inspect residential buildings to ensure that no damage could endanger the stability of the building before returning to the house.
