Jebol Embankment Causes Floods In Major General Sungkono Surabaya

SURABAYA - Department of Water Resources and Highways (DSDABM) Surabaya City said the coating of the embankment broke when heavy rains caused flooding in the area of Jalan Mayjen Sungkono, Kota Pahlawan, East Java.

Head of DSDABM Surabaya City Lilik Arijanto said the 20 meter long embankment burst occurred when heavy rains flushed the Kembang Kuning area.

"Incidentally, it is time for the embankment to be reconditioned. At the location, we deployed one unit of heavy equipment and 40 people from the gas station," Lilik said as quoted by ANTARA, Friday, April 28.

For this reason, he said, his party moved quickly to repair the river embankment in the broken Kembang Kuning area. A total of 40 Water Resources and Highways Task Force (DSDABM) in Surabaya City was immediately dispatched to carry out emergency response at the location.

Lilik said, initially, the repair was wearing a sandbag or sandbag and then continued by installing river stones. When the repair was carried out, a number of streams were closed. He also targets all the repairs to be completed today.

"So, as a result of the broken embankment coating, so that the floodgates were closed and the flow of water headed towards Major General Sungkono. This was done to minimize the occurrence of floods that rose in the Kembang Kuning area and its surroundings. However, about 20 minutes the inundation had receded after repairs were made," he said.

Selain itu, Lilik juga memastikan, untuk mengantisipasi hal serupa terjadi ke depannya, maka pihaknya akan melakukan pengecekan ulang di sepanjang saluran itu, sehingga nanti bisa diketahui mana yang sudah harus diperbaiki dan yang masih kokoh.

"We will see first, as much as possible today we are investigating which embankments are starting to become critical. We have seen that so far (the embankment), we will strengthen all of you in the future," said Lilik.

According to him, the average overflow of water occurred in the embankment of the Kembang Kuning river. Therefore, he and his staff at the DSDABM immediately checked the vulnerable points along the one kilometer of the Kembang Kuning river embankment.

"Meanwhile, the length of the embankment that broke is 20 meters. Then we re-check the worrying points to reach the Banyu Urip area," he said.

In addition, he also explained that when it rained heavily, there were still a number of puddles in several places. However, when the rain started to subside and a maximum of 30 minutes, the inundation would immediately recede.

"But we still don't want puddles even though it's only 30 minutes, that's why we continue to make improvements," he said.
